What is it about marching band that’s so deeply moving that it brings me to tears? I can’t figure it out, but know I’m not alone. Is it the celebration of sound? The unrestrained exuberance? The experience is overwhelming.
I’ve been listening to Homestead High School Mighty Mustang Marching Band, just down the street. Under the direction of John Burn, they’ve risen to national prominence, last year the only band from the west coast to perform at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and also performing at Carnegie Hall. Locally, they’ll provide a pre-game show for the 49ers October 18 game at San Francisco Candlestick Park.
Their success is no accident. They practice long hours, starting early summer, and seek nothing less than perfection — but never at the expense of excitement.
