This course will examine fundamental techniques of guitar playing. We will cover strokes, scales, barre chords, artificial harmonics and more. Students of all levels, including beginners, are welcome. Use the Zoom link above to join the class at 6:45 p.m.
Setup recommendation for participants:
An external microphone such as a Zoom USB digital microphone is recommended for good sound quality. For example, the Zoom H1n works very well. If you don’t have one, the microphone in your computer or mobile device will be adequate.
We recommend that you install the latest version of Zoom. Go to the Zoom/Check for Updates menu item and run the update, or go to Download Zoom Update.
About the instructors
San Francisco-based classical guitarist and teacher Bradly Pupa has performed Manuel Ponce’s Concierto del Sur with the Berkeley Symphony, presented a recital on the Peninsula Guitar Series, and toured Beijing, Tianjin, and Hangzhou, China. He is the first prize winner of the 2017 Sierra Nevada Competition. Bradly received his bachelor's degree in 2016, his master's in 2018, and his Professional Studies Diploma in 2019 from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Sérgio Assad and Judicaël Perroy. Bradly is on the faculty of the guitar program at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz.
Canadian classical guitarist Katie Gavelin has been a part of the musical world for more than 20 years. From a young age, she had a love for the instrument that quickly grew into a desire to make it her profession. Katie has been a featured artist with the Calgary Classical Guitar Society and given numerous solo and chamber performances in the Southern Alberta area since 2008, presenting works by Britten, Bogdanovic, Hoppstock, Beauvais and Tarrega. In 2014 she had the honor of premieringThe Second Oldest Question by William Beauvais, written for her in 2013. Katie also was a member of the inaugural U.S. Guitar Orchestra in summer 2019, premiering three pieces written for the group on a multi-city tour with renowned guitarist William Kanengiser beginning in Carnegie Hall and ending in Paris.
Katie has had the honor of participating in masterclasses with Roland Dyens, Kazuhito Yamashita, Michael Partington and Manuel Barrueco. As a teacher, Katie believes in creating strong musical fundamentals while exploring various styles of music. Blending music theory with technique, she strives to help her students achieve a strong technical understanding of how the guitar works and how music is constructed. Katie completed her Bachelor of Music in 2012 under Ralph Maier at the University of Calgary. She continued her studies in 2015 with a Master of Music and in 2016 with a Professional Studies Diploma from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the instruction of Marc Teicholz.
