Clinic on Modern Fingerstyle with Janet Noguera

Saturday March 2 at 11:30 a.m. Free admission

DIRECTIONS: Evergreen Valley High School

Join Janet Noguera for an interactive workshop in Modern Fingerstyle. Using some of her original compositions as examples, the clinic will explore the use of modern techniques such as hammer-ons and harmonics, slap technique, two-handed tapping, over-the-neck style, lap tapping, and percussive fingerstyle. Learn to experiment with these techniques to create unique Modern Fingerstyle pieces.

Incorporating a variety of styles, concepts, and techniques, Mexican-American modern fingerstyle guitarist Janet Noguera creates an innovative, imaginative, and unexpected soundscape with the acoustic guitar. Acoustic Guitar Magazine notes that "in Noguera’s hands, these extended techniques never come across as gratuitous but always feel like an integral part of her compositions. And when she plays with more conventional technique, Noguera is just as inventive."

At age 19, Noguera was featured in the May 2014 issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine as one of "30 Great Acoustic Guitarists under the age of 30." The same year, she won the international Lowden Young Guitarist of the Year competition for performers and composers under age 25. In 2017, Noguera graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a Bachelor's of Music in classical guitar performance. Later, she won the international Fretmonkey Guitar Solo Contest of 2017. Janet has opened for notable players including Andy McKee, Andrew York, and Laurance Juber and given performances and workshops in universities and academies in Mexico and the U.S. She has been invited to teach multiple times at the popular Thomas Leeb’s Acoustic Fingerstyle Bootcamp in Val Verde, Calif., at Don Ross’s online academy, and recently at her alma mater UC Santa Cruz.

Noguera has performed in events including the first Women of Fingerstyle Concert in Anaheim, Calif., sharing the stage with Kaki King, Vicky Genfan, Muriel Anderson, Christie Lenee, and others. Janet toured with the prestigious International Guitar Night 2022 with Thu Le, Luca Stricagnoli, and Lulo Reinhardt. That same year, she released her full-length debut album Myriad Worlds, which has been praised by guitar magazines including Akustik Guitarre, Guitare Sèche, Fingerstyle Journal, and Acoustic Guitar. In 2023, Janet toured with three other female guitarists in six European countries and soon afterwards  debuted a successful solo guitar tour in Italy. In March 2024, Janet will join Kaki King in northern California for her SEI project, a performance piece combining choreography and movement with the guitar.
