Performance Anxiety Workshop with Daniel Ramjattan
Directions
Palo Alto Adult School and the South Bay Guitar Society are pleased to present the lecture Music Performance Anxiety and You!, led by Dr. Daniel Ramjattan of Wilfrid Laurier University of Ontario, Canada. Admission is free.
Music performance anxiety is a nearly universal experience for musicians of all disciplines. We improve technical and musical skills through lessons and practice but also need strategies addressing our emotional and physiological responses to performing onstage. This two-hour lecture on performance anxiety will explain the causes of anxiety and offer science-based strategies to facilitate peak performance in the face of the challenges of playing before an audience. A question-and-answer period will follow the lecture.
Dr. Daniel Ramjattan completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Toronto in 2022 and wrote his dissertation on music performance anxiety among classical guitarists. He has lectured on the topic at McGill University, the University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, Memorial University, the University of Waterloo and Mount Royal University, among others. He has appeared on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's television program The National as an expert on music performance anxiety.
As a guitar performer, Dr. Ramjattan has premiered dozens of chamber and solo works and given recitals in Europe and across Canada, the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and Japan. He has performed in festivals including the 21C Music Festival, Open Ears Festival, Guitare Alla Grande, INNERChamber, Ottawa Chamberfest, Livorno Music Festival and many more. He made his concerto debut with Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez in 2023 with the Stratford Symphony.
Dr. Ramjattan's debut studio album "Inspirations: New Works for Solo Guitar" features his interpretation of six brilliant works by Canadian composers, including three world premiere recordings. CBC Radio’s Paolo Pietropaolo featured the album as its Record of the Week in 2022. WholeNote Magazine described his playing as "beautifully clean."
Dr. Ramjattan is on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University in Ottowa and designed and inaugurated the school's first music performance anxiety and performance skills course in the fall of 2022.
