Clinic on Raga for Guitar with Jack Gates
Saturday March 2 at 3:00 p.m. Free admission.
DIRECTIONS: Evergreen Valley High School
This clinic will address with Raga structures that make your guitar music more varied and exciting. The characteristic note pathways that make Raga so distinctive involve ascending and descending patterns, movement beyond the octave, displaced Pentatonic scales and special “heart phrases” that are repeated. We'll examine Western classical scales and their direct relationship to the raga scales that are found in north and south Indian classical music. Chordal playing is not a part of traditional Raga, but some intriguing sounds can be derived with three and four note chord combinations within the scales. We'll offer call and response playing for all participants in the traditional way.
